CRISIS!!!!!
OMG.
OMG.
OMG.
This will be our saddest and scaredest post to date.
We have just experienced the “Click of Death” on our Macbook. That would be our digital powerhorse, the one housing all of our photos, videos, journals, movies we brought from home, G’s METICULOUS chronicling of every penny spent so that we can be sure we make this trip last as long as we intended it to. Which, btw, she just spent the past 3 days copying ALL statements from ALL (6!!!) accounts and painstakingly entering in every day of the past month’s expenditures from the wire notebook she diligently carries around to mark down every time we buy something. She’s also been staying up til all hours of the night organizing and re-structuring the thousands upon thousands of files that had piled up all over the computer until they were (nearly-)perfectly ordered. What was the next step?
That’s right. To back up all these updates to the external hard drive, in case anything ever happens to the computer.
We feel like we are going to be sick.
We HAVE done a pretty good job of backing up to multiple sources regularly, thank god. We think it was last done a month ago. It’s not bad enough to go jump in front of a tuk-tuk, but it is bad enough to go to the bar and blow through some savings so we can laugh instead of cry about this.
All crossed fingers, prayers, hail Marys, Ganeshas or Buddhas, recommendations for a good computer repair place in Chiang Mai or Bangkok, or pity beers are welcomed tonight.
RIP, Macbook HD? Please no. :(
P.S. If any Apple representatives happen to get wind of this and would like to donate two Macbook Airs to our journey, we would be willing to accept them. We’re just saying.

oh no!!!! Crossing my fingers for you two!!
is it a grey screen? if the computer screen is grey it is totally the hard drive.
yikes! have a beer or 9! Much luck finding a repair person.
ive never seen two people waste more time on the most insignificant/minute details of an around the world trip than you two. forget everything and just travel. travel….
I don’t have a macbook, but I do have a spare IBM thinkpad I could send you! That or consult with my dad via internet/phone if you can. He has a website you can contact him on (www.ctnwphoenix.com) or you can call him 623-825-0199. He fixes macbooks and all other computers for a living; that’s his personal business now! Good luck!
Oh come on Nick, stop reading/commenting if you disagree so strongly!
If you’re so big on ‘just traveling’, go travel yourself and do it quietly, for yourself. And stop wasting the time of people who do care. This blog is about sharing an experience, which is part of the total travel package to some.
You have a right to your way, but why judge others for doing it theirs?
@nick- hahahaha; might wanna grow up and take ur own advice mr… must be one very sad and jealous person to not just follow, but also take the time out of your busy life to (negativley) comment on these two wonderful peoples hard work… i agree with g- i wish just one thing upon you… A HUG :)
Oh I hope the data can be recovered… such elaborate trips seldom happen more than once a lifetime and the pain of losing the records of these lovely moments is inconceivable… Talking of keeping records of every “insignificant/minute detail”, LOL, I keep every bus ticket, restaurant receipt and even hand written notes just for the memory. Best wishes. :)
It was kind of weird… G was just chugging along listening to some music and moving some files around, and then I heard it. Spin…. Click click…. Spin…. Click…..Click. Every techie dreads it. I probably even turned a bit white… I turned the computer off within the 3rd click.
@Hillary we haven’t turned it back on so we haven’t seen the dreaded blinking folder of doom :/ I’m hoping that’s not the case so we can recover some/most of the files.
Going to go look for a hard drive today and do the repair myself. Hopefully I can find something comparable! I’ll definitely be drinking some more beers tonight!
Thanks for the nice messages everybody (almost), I’ll keep you posted on status. G should be back up and running in no time!!
P.S. Whoever thought of bootable USB drives is genius.
@Sjoerd YOU DIDN’T CROSS THEM HARD ENOUGH!!! I BLAME YOU!! jk :) Thanks for the support, Soj.
@Hil We settled for just one since we dashed out just in time for closing time. But we made it a good strong one. That helped. Beer helps.
@Sue Thanks for the support and offer! The computer itself has gone in for repair and we’re keeping the hard drive to send home and try to get it worked up since it does have some irreplaceable files that we’d like to have (like Ray’s long-awaited birthday coconut). Will keep your dad in mind for sure, thanks!
@Sjoerd, Meg and Priyank You guys are fantastic. Thanks for understanding.
@Ray Hun I know you REALLY wanted a new laptop to replace our crappy little one that you were tearing your hair out having to attempt to program on. But please try to sabotage the RIGHT one next time? ;)
